Galen Willard Hillyer, the son of Galen and Vella Walter Hillyer, was born on November 9, 1918 in Cedar County, Iowa and died May 16, 2011 in De Witt, Clinton County, Iowa. He married 1) Mary Helen Bartscher on August 29, 1939, in Winterset. She was born on January 30, 1916 and died on May 3, 1984 (aged 68). He married 2) a widow, Emilie H. "Millie” (nee Hase) Krueger, daughter of Daniel and Ottilie (nee Stelter) Hase on July 7, 1984 in Wilton, Iowa. She was born on 11 May 1913 in Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa and died on 31 Jul 2005 (aged 92) in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. Galen and Emilie are buried in Davenport Memorial Park in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa.
DEWITT, Iowa - G. W. "Bud” Hillyer, 92, of DeWitt, formerly of Wilton and Blue Grass, died on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at the West Wing Place Nursing Home in DeWitt. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 16, 2011, at the Bentley Funeral Home, Durant. Burial will take place in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, May 16, 2011, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Wilton-Durant Food Pantry in his memory. Bud was born November 9, 1918, in Cedar County, the son of Galen and Vella Walter Hillyer. He married Mary Helen Bartscher on August 29, 1939, in Winterset. She preceded him in death. He later married Emilie H. "Millie” Hase Krueger on July 7, 1984 in Wilton. She preceded him in death on July 31, 2005. He had owned and operated a welding shop in Wilton and later a TV and radio repair shop. On or about 1960, he designed and built a 45 Cal and 50 Cal inline muzzle loader rifle. The Wilton Advocate took his photo and did an interview with Bud regarding these unique guns. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing. He was a member of the Wilton Rifle Club for many years and enjoyed trap and target shooting. After he retired, he enjoyed painting outdoor scenery and working in his woodworking shop. Bud will be loved and remembered by all who knew him. He is survived and lovingly remembered by a daughter Emilie Mimi Leese of Davenport, a son Daniel and wife, Shirley Krueger, of DeWitt; four grandchildren, Danny Krueger, Chris and her husband, Tom Jones, Bradley and his wife, Jennifer Krueger, and Janine McIllece; and eight great grandchildren, Bradyn and Brennen Krueger, Casey, Kayla and Bailey Jones, Justen Kruse and Bradley and Katelyn McIllece. WILTON JUNCTION
Galen W. Hillyer, 68, of Wilton Junction, died Sunday night at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a long illness. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Griffith Funeral Home, with burial in Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Tuesday. Mr. Hillycr was born in Tipton and was a Wilton Junction resident for four years. He was a former Cedar County resident and was a retired farmer. He was married to Vella Walter in 1915, at Tipton. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Warren W., Tipton and Galen, Wilton Junction; a daughter, Elaine Nabergall, Davenport; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. BURLINGTON, IA. - Services for Almon "Knute" Hillyer, 65, of Burlington, who died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Burlington, Medical Center, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Sheagren Funeral Home. Mr. Hillyer was the retired owner of Hillyer Trucking. He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Lindal of Osceola; two daughters, Mary King of Corning and Alice Hillyer of Burlington; his father, John Sr. of Nichols; four sisters, Ethel Green of Nichols, Genevieve Still of Conesville, Jeanette Carlile of Muscatine and Grace Krolak of Peru, Illinois; a brother, John of Middletown; and five grandchildren. | Bernard H. Hillyer, 80, died July 31, 2000, in Knoxville, Iowa. Memorial services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Bernard H. Hillyer Sr. was born April 27, 1920, in Worthing, England, the son of Hugh and Helen Hillyer. He attended Brighton College in England, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture. He served in the H.M.S. Royal Navy during World War II. Bernie moved to the United States in 1946. He lived in Fargo before moving to Bismarck. He operated his own architectural firm during the years he lived in North Dakota. In later years he moved to Minot where he resided for five years before moving to Knoxville in 1993. Since arriving in Knoxville, he had served as the building inspector for the City of Knoxville. Bernard is survived by two sons, Dr. Bernard C. Hillyer, Knoxville, and Paul Hillyer, Owatonna, Minn.; two daughters, Mary Nelson, Rosemont, Minn., and Cindy Seabold, Mareno Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other cherished family and friends.
