L. H. Hillyer, Ex-Solon, Dies at 91
SAN MARCOS - LeRoy Hamilton Hillyer, a retired teacher and county surveyor and a former state representative, died Friday in Austin at age 91. Hillyer first came to San Marcos in 1882. He served as state representative from 1910 to 1912. For the past year he had lived at 906 Mary St in Austin. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday from the First Baptist Church of Rockdale. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Rockdale under the direction of the Weatherford Funeral Home. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Willie Maude Hillyer of Austin; five daughters, Mrs. R. H. Dixon and Mrs. Lucille Holloway, both of San Antonio, Mrs. Wilma McCoy of Kerrville, Mrs. Ruth Hester of Austin, and Mrs. Alek Piasecky of Alexandria, Va.; one son, LeRoy W. Hillyer of Dallas; four sisters, Mrs. Edith Neal of Santa Fe., N. George Ballard Hillyer
G. Ballard Hillyer, 78 of 1706 East Poplar Street, died at 5:45 a.m. in a local hospital after an illness of three days. A resident of Victoria for seven years, Mr. Hillyer was born May 7, 1891, in Davilla, Texas to the late Mr. and Mrs. Junius Hillyer. He was a former resident of Dallas, and a retired employee of Lone Star Gas Company of Dallas. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas with burial at the Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Dallas. McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Surviving are his wife, Adela Kerr Hillyer of Victoria; a daughter, Mrs. Henry L. Pritchett of Houston, three sisters, Mrs. R. G. Buford, Mrs. C. C. Garrett and Mrs. F. L. Tiller of Dallas; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

On May 9, 1987, God called Bro. Joseph Sr. from labor to reward. He was born in Edna, Texas to the late Buck Hillyer and Ora Williams. He received his formal education at the Edna High School in Edna, Texas. Mr. Hillyer was baptized at an early age and and joined the Baptist Church. He united with the New Light Baptist Church on January 31, 1954 by Christian Experience and served on Usher Board No. 1 until his health began to fail. Mr. Hillyer was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the A.F. & A. M. Hope Lodge. He also was a member of the American Legion of Goliad, Texas. Mr. Hillyer served in the Armed Forces from 1943 to 1946 and was employed with Civil Service from 1947 to 1978. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Elizabeth Jones on March 29, 1957. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife: Mrs. Elizabeth Hillyer; one daughter, Mrs. Allie Faye Smith, Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, Mr. Joseph Hillyer Jr., San Antonio, Texas, Mr. Leo Hillyer, Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Aliie Faye Pitts and Mrs. Laure Johnson, Corpus Christi; five brothers, Mr. Dan Hillyer, Vitoria, Texas, Mr. Leroy Hillyer and Mr. Clifton Hillyer, Corpus Christi, Texas, Mr. William Hillyer, Robstown, Texas and Mr. James Hillyer, Austin, Texas. EL CAMPO - Funeral services will be held Wednesday for Raymond D. Hillyer Sr., 84, of Louise who died Monday in an El Campo hospital after a short illness. Time of the services has been changed to 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Wheeler Funeral Home in El Campo. The Rev. John Willmann will officiate, and burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo. Born in Louise in 1905 to the late D.D. Hillyer and Lesa Fischer Hillyer, Mr. Hillyer owned and operated the Hillyer grocery store his father opened in 1909, making it the longest continually operated business in Louise. In addition to his business and farming interests, he was active in the Lions Club, fire department and chamber of commerce, served on the Louise Water Board and was co-chairman of the board at First State Bank of Louise. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of El Campo. He attended University of Texas and Texas A&M. Surviving are his wife, Marie O. Petersen Hillyer of Louise; two sons, Raymond Hillyer Jr. of El Campo and James Hillyer of Louise; a brother, Wayne F. Hillyer of Victoria; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Louis Hillyer; and a sister, Lorena Hillyer Fox. Pallbearers will be Bill Jenkins, John Stockton, Douglas Hillyer, Robert Hillyer, Jerome Sablatura and Bubba Crowell. Wide Hillyer 74 of 3005 Alta Vista Lane died at 11:50 pm Tuesday Sept 11, 1990, in Baptist Memorials Hospital. Graveside service will be at 11 am Friday Sept 14 in Fair-mount Cemetery with Dr Jerold McBride officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home Wide was born May 22, 1916, in San Angelo. He was the youngest of nine children born to the Rev Lawrence and Della (nee White) Hillyer. He attended the San Angelo schools and graduated from high school in May 1934 and then attended San Angelo Junior College While attending high school, Wide went to work part time for the “M” System food stores and remained with them in various capacities for a number of years. On May 30, 1937, he and Bobbie Joe Mann were married in San Angelo. In 1942, Wide was appointed to the position of railway mail clerk by the US Postal Service. He volunteered to serve in the Army Air Corps in 1943 as a cadet after which he returned to his former job as railway mail clerk. In October of 1944. he transferred to the San Angelo Post Office where he remained until his retirement in June 1972. In addition to his job with the post office, Wide worked part time for the 'M' System Food Stores as credit manager and in a security capacity. In 1976, he and Bobbie Jo purchased a ranch northeast of San Angelo. After his wife of 41 years, Bobbie Jo, passed away in 1979, he continued to work the ranch and married Ima Loy White in Wichita Fads in 1980. They worked the ranch together and sold it in 1982. At age 12, Wide joined the First Baptist Church of San Angelo. He became a member of the Business Men's Bible Class in 1942 and served as the president from July 1955 through December 1955. Survivors include his wife Ima of the home, two sisters, Ruth Hillyer and Laura D Merlino, both of San Angelo, a stepson Gary R. White of Wichita Falls, a stepdaughter, Gail England, and her husband James of Southlake, Texas, one grandson, John Dea, and a granddaughter Susan Dea, both of Southlake. He was born Sept 23, 1927, in San Angelo to Lawrence and Anna Bell Fondran Hillyer and resided in Palestine since 1983. Mr. Hillyer was a retired seaman with 35 years service in the U.S. Merchant Marines and also worked with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Tennessee Colony for many years. He was a member of Broyles Chapel Baptist Church. Survivors include one brother, William L. Hillyer, Temecula, Calif.; one sister, Louise Korona, San Angelo; five nieces; and three nephews. Ruth Edith Hillyer, 79, of Houston, died Sunday, June 26, 1994, in Houston. She was born Ruth Edith Hayden on June 10, 1915, in Eagle Lake. She and her husband, A. E. Hillyer operated one of the first coin-operated washaterias in the Houston Heights area. The couple were members of the Church of God and celebrated their 57th anniversary last March 20. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 29, at the West 11th Street Church of God in Houston with Interment following at Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake. Services were under the direction of Heights Funeral Home, Houston. Local arrangements were under the direction of Dulany Funeral Home, Eagle Lake. Ruth Hillyer, daughter of Reverend Lawrence Hillyer and Della Clyde Wilie, was born 24 May 1907, in McLennan County, Texas and died 22 December 2001 in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas.

Miss Ruth Hillyer, 94, of San Angelo died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at her residence. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Shotwell officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Miss Hillyer was born May 24, 1907, in Waco, Texas. She moved to San Angelo with her family in 1912. Her public-school education was taken in the San Angelo Independent Schools. She received her bachelors and masters’ degrees, respectively, in the field of mathematics from Baylor University. Miss Hillyer’s teaching career lasted 46 years in Tom Green County schools, 42 years in San Angelo as a teacher or administrator. During her teaching career, she was very active in teachers’ professional organizations. She helped organize the Concho Educators Credit Union. and the San Angelo Classroom Teachers Association. In the later, she served as the first and fifth president. Her participation in the teacher organizations on the area and state level consisted of president of District XV, president of the Texas State Teachers Association in 1952 and 1953, and various positions in the Texas Classroom Teachers Association. Miss Hillyer’s civic services covered Girl Scout work, director of the Lions Club summer camp for underprivileged children and a director of the San Angelo Boys Club where she also served as the board president. For 23 years she participated in AARPs tax aide program helping hundreds of elderly and others fill out their income tax reports. Ruth was very active in the First Baptist Church where she participated in directing youth activities and many years as a Sunday school teacher for both youth and adults. Survivors include a sister, Laura Dell Merlina of San Angelo, and a nephew, Marvin Boyles. Johnsons Funeral Home; Tom Green County, Texas.

Obituary
Oscar Hillyer, Jr., 88, of Anahuac, was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, July 27, 2002. A service of celebration will be at First United Methodist Church of Anahuac at 1 Pm, Tuesday, July 30, 2002 with burial following at Anahuac Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be at 3 Pm, in the Methodist Youth Center. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Monday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. Oscar was born December 17, 1913 in Sour Lake to parents; Eddie O. Hillyer, Sr. and Anne Stafford Hillyer, a former resident of Smith Point and Houston, he has resided in the Anahuac area for the past 15 years. He was a self-made man rising from the oil fields of Sour Lake, to the Supervisor of Employee Relations of the producing department for the Houston division of Texaco, and retired from Texaco in 1976 after 43 years of service. He was also past president of the Houston Personnel Association and chairman of the United Fund, past president of the Anahuac Chapter 1171 of AARP, member, bazaar chairman, and chairman to the board of trustees of the First United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren who along with everyone else affectionately called him 'Poppy'. He loved to entertain his many friends and family with food, song, and stories along with gifts from his woodworking shop. He was a truly unique individual. He was a born leader with an infectious positive personality and untiring devotion to his family, church and community who will greatly miss him. Mr. Hillyer was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Stafford Hillyer, and sister: Hyacinth Schmeitzel. Survivors include his wife of 68 years: Mae Hillyer of Anahuac, their two sons: Eddie Hillyer and wife Fay of Beaumont and Dick Hillyer and wife Nancy of Spring, sister: Pat Hoeber of Concan, brother: Ray Hillyer of Pensacola, FL., six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Carol Ann Hillyer, 53, was born in Dallas, TX on August 3, 1951, and was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy Wilburn Hillyer and Susie Stowers Buford Hillyer. She graduated from Lubbock Christian College with a degree in Library Science, and shared a lifelong love of books, poetry and the arts with her beloved family and friends. Her Haiku poems published in several volumes of poetry, and her special poems and hand-crafted gifts are treasured by her loved ones. She is survived by her brother, Loren Hillyer of Dallas; sister, Bonnie Hillyer Lang of Dallas; two nieces and their husbands, Diana Lang Stovall and her husband Kevin Stovall of Frisco, Marlo Wilks and her husband David Wilks of Belton; nephew, Jason Hillyer Lang of Farmington, CT; dear grandnieces and grandnephew, Katelin Wilks, Heather Stovall and Jackson Wilks. She is also survived by her great-aunt, Lucille Holloway of San Marcos; many loving cousins and their families.
