| I believe George Westwater and Catherine Westwater (see below on list) were my great uncle and aunt. George was sister to Helen (Nellie) Westwater (who became Clark on marriage)who was my grandmother. I believe George served with Lawrence of Arabia in the WW1. He was born in Scotland (probably Kirkcaldy)and emigrated to New Jersey, USA sometime afterwards. - submitted by

George Westwater was my Grandfather. He and his wife (my Nana) lived in Irvington, New Jersey for a great part of their lives. He came to America around 1912 on the steamer Columbia which docked in New York harbor. He spoke affectionately of Nell often, and when we last visited Kirkcaldy many years ago, we drove by the crofter’s house in which she lived. She always called him “Dodd” – in fact, she was the only one who did, and no one ever was told why. At one time, my Great-Aunt Betty and Nell (another one) lived at 85 Forfar Rd, in Dundee, along with my Uncle Jimmy (who carried shrapnel in his leg from the Boer War all his life). His daughter, Katherine Murray Westwater was my mother.
George did, indeed, serve under T. E. Lawrence in North Africa during his campaigns in WWI. There is some conjecture that he was mentioned by name in one of Lawrence’s books – either The Seven Pillars of Wisdom or Revolt in the Desert – not sure which one. I have all of his medals, a camp bible and diary from the time period noting all of the places he camped/visited. He was an amazing man. According to his wife Catherine, he was reported missing in action four times, and killed in action three times – mostly due to the fact that he was a motorcycle courier (an activity he later found out had an estimated life expectancy in the field of two days, give or take).
It is my understanding that he was, indeed, born in Kirkcaldy. His father was a minister, and very stern. George spoke about a harsh upbringing. So much so that George ran away from home at a young age three times and tried to enlist. On the third try he was successful (he looked old enough, but was, in fact 16).

| Leo Westwater was the brother of Waldo (listed here) & they both sailed from Glasgow & arr in NY on 28th Aug 1905. They travelled with Jessie Westwater. Leo was 3 & Waldo 6. Jessie 35. They were nephews /?cousins of my Grandfather Thomas Westwater who was my Mothers father.As my mother died 3yrs ago aged 95 I am trying to trace the family I have never met .
