| I believe this man had a reptile shop on Market Street back in the 60's. I had some contact with him from demonstrations with my cub scout troop. I brought him a large black snake I had caught one day after school. He also chased my dad with a black indigo snake at the Morris, PA rattlesnake hunt. That was funny...for me. My dad hated snakes. Walt gave the snake to me while he went to make up with dad and shared a cold beverage with him. Great memories. Drop me a line if you knew Walt. - submitted by

| Walter Young was a well known and loved commercial artist and herpetologist whose sign shop was located in several places over the years following his move to Corning in 1935. The last two of those locations were on Market Street. My understanding is that after the Morris, PA Rattlesnake Roundup started in 1956, Walt participated annually into the 1970s. There he was one of the snake pit officials responsible for measuring snakes. Always willing and eager to educate people about the many benefits of snakes and what to do in the event of a bite, he would bring along part of his menagerie and put on an exhibition for the crowds that grew ever larger with each passing year. At least one of those snakes would be a pet constrictor. There are many stories about Walt draping his large pet over a spectator’s shoulders. Sometimes the spectator wasn’t aware of what was coming. When I was in grade school a friend took me to Walt’s sign shop on East Market Street. After Walt greeted us, we were permitted into the back of the shop where we were surrounded by the overbearing hiss of many captive rattlesnakes. It was a great thrill and a bit scary. The next time I saw Walt was when he was a guest lecturer for my CCC biology class. Of course he brought along a few snakes, a cobra and a timber rattlesnake. Walter Young’s life size portrait is one of many on the People Wall located in Corning City Hall. The wall was completed in 1976. I am assisting a Corning resident who is gathering stories and memories to go with those portraits so that people today and in the future can learn why those individuals on the wall were so special.
