 | A school principal who took children with mental, physical and social challenges under her wing was recognized at the Hastings African American Awareness Committee’s 15th annual Black History Banquet Saturday.
The Elmer Glenn Humanitarian Award was given posthumously to lifelong Hastings resident Viola Elliott, who died Oct. 23, 1990.

Elliott’s niece, Ginny Poe of St.Louis, accepted the award on behalf of her family.
Elliott served as principal of the Spencer Park School in Hastings, which was located in what is now Good Samaritan Village. Most families in the village worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot east of Hastings, and many students at the school were minorities or low-income.
“She just felt all children should have the same educational opportunities,” Poe said.
“Many of the families in Spencer Park had children with mental and physical challenges as well as social, and many of them, both parents worked at the Navy Depot. Those children couldn’t go home for lunch, so she started a hot lunch program for those kiddos who stayed at school.” Poe said Elliott also started a special education program at the school at a time when it didn’t yet exist in most places.
“At that time there were a lot of children who had survived polio, children with cerebral palsy or who had mental challenges.
She brought them all to school and she thought if you had the support system, these kids could thrive. That’s really what she set out to do,” Poe said.
Elliott never married or had children, but she passed her values to nieces and nephews, and Poe said she was the glue that held their family together. She said the award is a testament to her aunt’s life and values.
“She respected everybody from all walks of life. She thought if you’re in a position of influence, because you’re in a position where you might have more than someone else, it’s your responsibility to give back and to help those people,” Poe said.
The award was started last year and named for its first recipient, Elmer Glenn. His daughter, Deb Glenn Rasby of Columbus, presented the award.
She said Elliott was a trailblazer and served as a second mother to hundreds of children.
“She loved all children, but most dearly those with physical and mental challenges,” Rasby said. “She was a champion of education and she won’t be forgotten - submitted by Cherie Brown on 02/28/2012 |
