Trapper Creek resident Vincent Van Der Hyde Sr., 76, died July 29 of leukemia at Valley Hospital.
A service will be held at 7:30 tonight at Trapper Creek Elementary School, Mile 114.7 Parks Highway.
Mr. Van Der Hyde was born April 29, 1917, in Buffalo, S.D. He graduated from Superior Central High School in Superior, Wis.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radar technician. (At Virginia Beach)
Mr. Van Der Hyde worked for the Wisconsin Department of Highways and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
He came to Alaska in 1969 and went to work for the state Division of Aviation. After retiring in 1978, he was self-employed as a land surveyor.
Mr. Van Der Hyde often played Santa Claus during the holiday season in the Trapper Creek and Talkeetna areas.
His family said, "He enjoyed sharing stories of his exciting experiences from years of surveying and living in Alaska. He is remembered as an extraordinary individual hard-working, a friend to all, with deep insights into human nature and a love of the Alaska outdoors."
Mr. Van Der Hyde is survived by his wife, Marian of Trapper Creek; his sons, Vincent Jr. and Charles of Trapper Creek; his brother, Harry of Ocean Park, Wash.; his sisters, Helen Akey of Eveleth, Minn., and Nina Richardson of Seattle; his grandchildren, Patrick of Seattle, Colin of Salem, Ore., and Vincent of Reno, Nev., Kelly Jones of Rosamond, Calif., and Martin Guiles of Tucson, Ariz. - submitted by

Harry Slocum VanDerHyde
Sept. 13, 1918 to Oct. 21, 2006 Harry passed quietly at his home, surrounded by loved ones, Saturday morning, Oct.21st. Harry enjoyed a wonderful life filled with many family members and friends who loved him dearly and will miss his ever-present sense of humor and deep love of children and animals. He was preceeded in death by his wife Elva (1977) and his wife Marybelle (1996); also by his brother Vincent VanDerHyde and sister Nina Harms. Harry is survived by his sister Helen Akey, his children: Nancy James (Robert), David VanDerHyde, Barbara Soper, Virginia Twite, Judith Sherman (Jack) and Sandy Hilliard; his close personal friend and companion, Melissa Norrid, and his close personal friend and pool-playing partner, Tom Banks. Harry took great pride in his grandchildren Kristi Clark, Jeff James, Heidi Durall (Mark), Laura Nelson, Eric Braaten (Lan), Kevin Hull (Kelly), Justin Hull (Misty), Heather Cooper (Craig), Ricky Flower, Erik Brotman (Rebecca), Nikki Medeiros (Ben) and Jamie Brotman (Tim). He is also survived by several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Harry will be remembered by his great heart and unending efforts to lend “a helping hand to those in need,” and he served as a father or grandfather to many beyond his immediate family. He completed two homes virtually built by his own hands. He was a Navy veteran, and retired from the railroad in 1979. One of his great loves was playing billiards, even playing team tournaments well into his 80’s. A private family life celebration is being scheduled. The family has requested that anyone wishing to remember Harry please consider the American Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
