Paul Otto Arnold Unke was born September 11, 1915 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota and he died December 28, 2005 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.
OCCUPATION: Paul entered the job market in the difficult depression years. There were many applicants for an accountant job available with the railroad.A friend advised him to state "office boy" as the job for which he was applying. He was hired and remained with the Northern Railway for 26 years during which time he rose to the position of Assistant Controller. In 1946 he was sent to Chicago by the railroad to work for two years on the Pullman and Northern Railway merger. They provided an apartment for him and his father. After 26 years with the railroad Paul decided to accept a call from the Board of Trustees of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. He remained there as fiscal executive until his retirement on September 30, 1980.
MILITARY: World War II. Paul was drafted into the army on December 2, 1941 and on the way to training camp at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. His time in service was immediately changed to the "duration plus six months". He spent time in Texas, Georgia, S. Carolina, New York and California before being sent to the Pacific Theater where he served in New Zealand, Australia and Japan. His rank was Warrant Officer at the time of his discharge in February, 1946. He had received the American Defense Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon. The troop ship on which he crossed the ocean was the converted ocean liner Niew Amsterdam. It was 654 ft long and 90' wide carrying 7500 soldiers. In the 1960s the shipline offered to mail free of charge a large framed picture of the Niew Amsterdam to any of the soldiers who wished to have it. Paul requested it and it has hung on the wall of his home ever since.

Leo was born in Silver Lake Township, Martin Co, MN, to Irvin and Lena (Pauline Stock) Unke.
He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1939. He helped his father farm near Northrop, MN, until June 4, 1942, when he was inducted into the army as a Private six months after the USA entered World War II.
As a Sergeant he taught rifle maintenance, map reading, first aid and drill. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater 1 year 8 months. Upon discharge he attended the Agricultural College of the University of Minnesota.
With declining health he entered a veteran's hospital and later Redeemer Residence in Minneapolis to be near his brother, Willis. He died April 8, 2009 sixteen days before his 88th birthday.
Leo is survived by siblings Eunice (Louis) Bulfer of Fairmont, Wayne (Jean) Unke of Elysian, Willis (Martha) Unke of Fridley, Ronald (Karen) Unke of Fairmont, Roland (Shirley) Unke of Fairmont, and Joyce Boyum of Rochester.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert, and brother-in-laws Arthur Zoeller and Syvert Boyum.
A private memorial service will be held in Fairmont on Thursday, April 16, following internment at 11 AM in at the Fairmont Lakeside Cemetery. - submitted by

Reuben C. Unke, age 101, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Pine Villa, in Prairie du Sac. He was born in Denzer Township on January 4, 1908, the son of August and Ella (Enge) Unke.
Reuben moved with his family to the Town of Westpoint in 1911, where he farmed on the family farm on Unke Road all of his life. The farm will be eligible for designation as a Wisconsin Family Century Farm in 2011.
He married Anita Attoe on June 24, 1937, and was married for 62 years when Anita preceded him in death on July 23, 1999. Reuben was active in many rural and community organizations including the Sauk City Creamery Board of Directors and the Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital Board of Directors 1968-1983.
He was active in his church as a Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. Reuben was a charter member of both the Lake Wisconsin Free Church, Lodi, Wi and the Sauk Prairie Evangelical Free Church, Prairie du Sac, Wi.
His life was guided by and he encouraged others to live by teaching the Proverbs 3:5-6. "Trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
He is survived by three children, Velma (Karl) Marquardt of Middleton, Rolland (Patti) Unke of Lodi and Beverly Boos of Burlington; a son-in-law, Harold Meyer of Spring Grove, IL; 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherill Meyer; 2 grandsons, Phillip Unke and Craig Meyer; son in law Orville Boos; and two sisters, Vera Enge and Marvel Carncross.
A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Sauk Prairie Evangelical Free Church, with Pastor Dwight Pulsfus and Pastor Roy Anderson officiating.
Friends called from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Hooverson Funeral Home in Sauk City. Firends also called at Sauk Prairie Evangelical Free Church on Saturday, August 22, 2009 from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M.
The Hooverson Funeral Home of Sauk City assisted the family with their arrangements.
