Bessie Porter Townes, 83, of Star Route, Pickens, SC, died Tuesday, March 14, 1972, after a period of declining health. Mrs. Townes was the widow of Stace M. Townes, who preceded her in death Dec. 30, 1937. A lifelong resident of Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Elbert R. and Lucinda Lewis Porter.

Mrs. Townes was a member of the Mountain Grove Baptist Church and the Mothers' Class of the church.

Surviving are two daughters, Louise T. Cantrell, of Pickens, and Maebelle T. Mooneyham of Church Hill, TN, four sons, Alfred Townes of the home, Eddie Townes of Salem, AG and Fletcher Townes, both of Pickens, 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Malissa P. Lynch of Fayetteville, NC, and Ellie P. Freeman of Seneca, one brother, Tulla Porter of Baltimore, MD.

In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Townes was predeceased by two sons, Carlyle and Stace Townes, Jr., two sisters, Annah P. Alexander and Nan P. Baker, and two brothers, Robert S. Porter and T. Ed Porter.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Mountain Grove Baptist Church, Pickens, with the Revs. W. Paul Tankersley, Frank Looper, and Earl Roach officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active paulbearers will be grandsons, Bob Mooneyham, Gerald Townes, Jack Townes, J. F. Townes,Jr., along with Harold Walker, Mac Garrett, and Carl McConnell.

The body is at the Dillard Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.

A.G. Townes, 87, of 612 Edens Road, husband of Elizabeth Gilstrap Townes, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Hospice House of Anderson.

Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late Stacy Townes and Bessie Porter Townes.

Mr. Townes was retired from Singer Company (now Ryobi) and was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church. He was also a World War II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post #11.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jack Townes; one son-in-law, Douglas Fagan, husband of the late Patricia Townes Fagan; one brother, Fletcher Townes; two grandchildren, Randall Townes and Stacey Townes.

Mr. Townes was predeceased by one daughter, Patricia T. Fagan, two brothers, Eddie Townes, Alfred Townes, two sisters, Maybelle Mooneyham, and Louise Cantell.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 30, 2002, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Memorial Funeral Home with burial to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends prior to the service today from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family is at the home, 612 Edens Road, Pickens, S.C.

Dillard Memorial Funeral Home is serving the Townes family.

Veda Mae Grant Townes, 81, of 1173 East Preston McDaniel Road, died Thursday, February 16, 2006, at her home. A life-long resident of Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late J. Walter and Addie Hudson Grant. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Alfred Townes.

Mrs. Townes was from Singer Company, and worked five years after retirement as a bus assistant with Pickens County Schools. She was a member of Bethany Church of God.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and John Jackson of Landrum; one son, A. Lynn Townes of Pickens; one grandson, Keven H. Jackson of Landrum; seven sisters, Bernice Couch, Inez Grant, Bertha Townes, Dorothy Dodgens, Elizabeth Eades, Lou Grant, and Katie Grant, all of Pickens; four brothers, Rev. James Bill Grant of Simpsonville, Cecil H. Grant of Pickens, Rev. Donald W. Grant of Salem, and Joseph W. Grant of Pickens.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 18, 2006, at 3 p.m.at the Bethany Church of God, with Reverends Roger Stephens, Leon Parker, and Bennie Durham officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The body is at the Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, Easley, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, and will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The family is at the residence.
