Carl J. Spehr was my father. He served in India,China in WWII earning earning the Pacific Asiatic Medal for 3 expeditions. He worked with Gurka paratroopers and suffered a shrapnel would from a Japanese bomb. This happened while he was saving a young scared enlisted man during the attack. He left the U.S. Army as a Captain, U.S. Signal Corps.
He worked for General Electric at Whitesands with Von Braun on captured V-2 rockets. After serving in the Lutheran Mission to Papua New Guinea where I was born he returned to the U.S. and worked for International Research and Development. He pattened the first strobe lights for fog landings at Columbus airport Ohio. - submitted by

| Father of Richard Paul Spehr, Kurt Stephen Spehr, Allen Robert Spehr, Gary Carl Spehr, Ann Elaine Spehr, Joan Ellen Spehr, Glenn Spehr - all siblings. All but Glenn were born in Madang, Papua New Guinea but all are American Citizens by birth. Carl J. Spehr served in the United States Army in WWII in China and India. He accompanied Gurka Paratroopers in China and was wounded by shrapnel and received the Purple Heart Medal for his wounds. His wounds were damage to his kidney from a close bomb blast while he was rescuing a frightened soldier from certain death. He kept the bomb fragment that wounded him all his life. He also worked for General Electric at White Sands Missile Testing Range on captured German V-2 rockets with Vernor Von Braun the Rocket Scientist of NASA. He also served as a Lutheran Lay Missionary to Madang, Papua New Guinea as an Electronics Engineer teaching natives about electricity and Christ. His brother was Otto Paul Spehr of Bloomington Indiana a Lutheran Minister who also did Lutheran Missionary work in Liberia. - submitted by
