Thomas Victor Siporin of Oakland, who overcame childhood polio to become a gifted athlete, tireless attorney and prolific artist, died Thursday of cancer at Doctors Hospital in San Pablo. He was 59.
Mr. Siporin dedicated much of his legal career to defending the poor, the disenfranchised and the disabled until 1983, when he embraced the arts after losing his left leg to bone cancer. He was featured last year in "Against All Odds: Talent, Ingenuity and Disability," a show staged by the Berkeley Art Center to highlight techniques used by disabled artists.
Mr. Siporin was born in Moline, Ill. Although polio left him with a severely underdeveloped left arm, he became a formidable tennis player and star pitcher in high school. He earned varsity letters in baseball and soccer at Harvard University. He graduated with honors in 1964 and helped register black voters in the South.
After earning a law degree from UCLA in 1968, Mr. Siporin studied comparative literature at Hebrew University in Jerusalem until 1970.
Mr. Siporin spent the 1970s working for Legal Services in East Palo Alto and defending the United Farm Workers in the Central Valley and the American Indian Movement in Wounded Knee, S.D.
He was the executive director of the San Fernando Valley Neighborhood Legal Services in Los Angeles from 1980 until 1983. While there, Mr. Siporin helped launch a program to finance legal aid for the poor with interest paid on trust accounts containing settlements distributed to clients.
Mr. Siporin's paintings, often of coffeehouses and other scenes, appeared in more than 40 exhibitions in Berkeley and elsewhere. He also wrote numerous plays and performance pieces examining disability and other themes. Many of his works were featured two years ago at the Art & Soul World Exhibition for Artists with Disabilities in Los Angeles.
Mr. Siporin is survived by his partner of 24 years, Paula Morgan of Oakland;
his parents, Seymour and Mary Siporin of Laguna Hills; and his brother, Michael Siporin of Montclair, N.J.
