Original surname spelling: Johannessen, shortened to Johannesen upon immigration to US via Ellis Island, NYC in 1933.
Interesting facts: Sigvald was adopted by a nearby family after his birth, both of which occurred in Strusshamn, Askøy, Hordaland, Norway on March 8,1896. Because he was adopted, I have struggled in finding whom his birth parents were. Since Norway was still using patronymic at the time of his birth, it's safe to say his father's name was Johannes. In fact family rumor has it that Sigvald's father's name was Johannes Olssen (or Olsen); rumors of this kind have basically always been verified in my family so I have a good degree of faith in its accuracy. I also believe I did find evidence of his father's name being Johannes Olssen/Olsen almost a decade ago, but I've struggled to find this evidence again lately for some reason.
Another rumor related to this is the purported reason Sigvald was put up for adoption: apparently his mother (name unknown) died while birthing him, and his father Johannes was too much of alcoholic (which seems plausible given the apparently inborn genetic propensity to abuse alcohol and drugs that exists in yours truly, and also existed in my Sigvald's late son Leif, i.e. my paternal grandfather) to raise newborn baby Sigvald on his own. Furthermore, in the 19th century women essentially raised children completely and largely on their own. So having a mother was imperative, and may have facilitated his being put up for adoption by a nearby family with a nursing mother.
He spent his life as a carpenter, and moved from Strusshamn, Norway to Brooklyn, NY in 1933 with his wife Beatrice and his son Leif, and later moved from Brooklyn to Hollywood, FL 20-30 years later.
He was my patrilineal great-grandfather, and as far as I know, a full-blooded Norwegian (he certainly looked like one too). - submitted by
