| My grandmother was one of a kind...she loved to play jokes and always had time for me, no matter how busy she might be. She helped my step-grandfather lay brick and stone, even though she had steel pins in her leg due to a car accident years before. She was a short, round, jolly lady who walked with a limp due to that injury. However, she seldom complained, and it seemed to me that she spent basically every dollar she made from working on me. She always insisted that I have "spending money" in my pocket. She always encouraged me to sing for her, although I could barely carry a tune--she always acted as if an angel herself had come down to perform for her. *S* I called her "Nanny," pronounced with a long "a." I spent nearly every weekend and school holiday and summer vacation with her and my step-grandpa, W.A. Trent. They took me fishing, let me have "bunking" (slumber) parties, and always encouraged me and made me feel special. Nanny was my one and only link to my real mother, who left when I was three, and she that role when it would probably have been easier not to. Nanny made the best fried chocolate and fried peach pies I've ever tasted in my life. She could make anything mundane seem like an adventure, and she was the best person in my life during my childhood. She passed away when I was 18, shortly after I graduated high school. I miss her just as much today as ever...one thing, though, makes me smile. My oldest son, David Seymore, has Nanny's upbeat personality and sense of humor, and he's the prankster of the family now. *S* - submitted by
