Clyde Douglas Ryland, 77, of South Hill, died Monday, Oct 3, 2005. He was a very warm, caring, thoughful man. He was the forth of five children born of the late James Overton and Virginia Childress Ryland of South Hill.
He was survived by his sister Permelia Ryland Roest, who passed Sept 29, 2007; and her husband Calvin A. Roest, of Richmond; a nephew, Charles Roest, of St. Petersburg, Fl; a niece, Virginia Margaret Roest, of Charlotte NC; and several cousins and cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Christie and Virginia Sue Ryland; his brother Henry Ryland; and sister-in-law Gracie Ryland, who passed on Sept 18, 2005.
Mr Ryland was a retired employee of the local A&P grocery, working from 1947 to the store closing in 1981.
He resided his entire life at the family farm in South Hill. During the early 1990's, he volunteered numerous hours at the local Community Memorial Hospital, either on the floor or in the gift shop. He also served as president of the South Hill Ruritan and Woodmen of the World clubs for several years.
A funeral service was conducted Thurday, Oct 6, 2005 at 11 am at Crowder-Hite-Crews funeral home. Reverend Daniel Elmore presiding. Interment in Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetary in Northview. Pall bearers: Iverson Ryland; Ed Smith, Jr; Johnny Manning; Bobby Boswell; Billy Simon; Charles Roest; Lynn Smith and Glenn Price Hudson.
