GREENVILLE, N.C. — Mr. Robert William Harrold, 67, of 510 Kent Road, died at his home Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville, N.C., with the Rev. Thomas Midyette and the Rev. Charles Dupree officiating. Burial will follow immediately in the St. Paul’s columbarium.
Mr. Harrold, a native of Ellenburg Depot, N.Y., attended Norwich University and graduated from Plattsburgh State, where he received both his BS and MS degrees. He did additional graduate work at Columbia University. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1955 to 1958.
For 32 years he was active as a New York State educator, beginning as a teacher and supervisor and for 24 years served as the Assistant District Superintendent of Schools in a large area spanning four counties in upstate New York. In that capacity, he was responsible for occupational education, special education and teacher certification for 18 school districts. He had an active role in the building and operation of two large educational centers, which continue to serve the diverse needs of regular and adult students. In June 1992, the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES Board of Education named the Western Delaware Education Campus the "Robert W. Harrold Education Campus" in his honor.
Mr. Harrold moved to Greenville in July 1992 and in his retirement had worked at Sunshine Garden Center. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and had served as junior warden of the church. He regularly volunteered to serve meals at the Greenville Homeless Shelter and had assisted in several landscaping projects for Habitat for Humanity. He also assisted in the start-up of the Oakwood School.
Surviving him are his wife of 32 years, Mary Lou Dexter Harrold and their children, Scott William Harrold and wife Shirlee of Knoxville, Tenn., Mark Robert Harrold of St. Petersburg, Fla., Douglas Dexter Mugglin and wife Carol of Heath, Ohio, Craig Andrew Mugglin of Tallahassee, Fla., James Hoston III and wife Diane of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Edward Gilbertson of Yadkinville, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and his sister, Betty Ann Harrold and husband William of Arkport, N.Y.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at the Harrold home in Greenville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Organ Fund, 401 E. 4th St., Greenville, NC 27858.
