Where do I start??? Bob, as we knew him, was a class-act gentleman, husband, father and dear friend whom I miss a little more every day. I was introduced to Bob when I was about 12 years old. Even at such a young age I was a huge WWII buff and heard that my neighbor was a Marine during WWII so of course I had to meet him. His house was on my way to school so one afternoon while walking by, Bob was outside and I asked if he was a vet and that I was really interested to hear his story about his time of service. That was the beginning of our friendship and for the next four years ( I moved out of the state) we discussed everything from him being a member of the elite 1st Raider battalion landing on Tulagi, Guadalcanal, Bouganville and eventually Betio- Tarawa atoll. Over the course of those four years I began to learn alot not only about the war, but also Bob himself. We would sit for hours in his living room, or den if his malaria was acting up, and he would share some of the most gruesome facts of battle seen through his eyes. Never was there a time that he spoke with out the glare of a tear in his eyes. Now at the age of 27, I begin to wish I could relive those days with him. Since I myself am now a combat veteran of the battle of Baghdad with an elite Army Recon Troop, I know now why there was the pride, the honor, and the tears in the voice of a true American hero. Although, Bob did tell me never to refer to him as a hero, he'd say "You'll never meet a war hero, Jeff, war heroes don't come home." Well, Bob passed four months before I deployed and now I realize what he meant by that. He often ended our conversations with "keep your head down and your powder dry" as he did the last time we spoke and well,Bob, I took your advice and it brought me home. I am currently reading as many books as possible about the fight for "Bloody Tarawa" hoping to catch a glimpse of your name because I really miss you, Bob. So if you can hear me, thanks for the memories and lessons of combat and of life. Semper Fi Bob, keep your head down and your powder dry.
