| Ivan H. Oleson, US Army Colonel (Retired), age 86, died July 5, 2003 in Fairfax, VA, after a short illness. He had lived in Northern Virginia since 1962. Col. Oleson was born in Iowa and raised on a farm. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in agricultural economics. He was a member of the ISU Cossacks trick horseback riding team and several honorary societies. He served with the Second Armored Division in North Africa and Europe for three years during World War II. He participated in amphibious landings on hostile shores in North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. After owning a farm implement business, he was mobilized again in 1961 to take charge of all supply and logistics for the reactivation of Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He then served in the Pentagon in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics on active duty and in civil service until he retired in 1977. His decorations included the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Award, and Purple Heart. He was active in church, scouting, and community work, and was a 57-year member of Masonic Royal Lodge #428 in Newell, IA. Survivors included his wife of 57 years, Juanita Oleson of Fairfax; his brother, Dale Oleson of Newton, Iowa; two children, Gary Oleson and Diane Bird, of Reston; four grandchildren, Gretchen Harris, Ian Bird, Duncan Bird, and Amanda Oleson; and one great-grandchild, Jessie Harris.
