Leo Nissen, 75, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at his home in Fosston.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist, and the soloist was Joel Kezar.
Casketbearers were Brian Wilson, Paul Wilson, Chris Eide, Darren Eide, Chad Nissen, Mark Nissen and Andy Nissen. Honorary casketbearers were Stephanie Chapman, Jamie Wilson, Trisha Eide, Jodi Nissen, Alicia Nissen, Tosha Nissen, Jeremy Swanson, Jason Swanson and Justin Swanson. Military honors were accorded by the Thief River Falls American Legion and VFW Posts. Interment was in Silverton Lutheran Cemetery in Silverton township of Pennington county. Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Leo Melvin Nissen was born May 18, 1925 in Highlanding township of Pennington county, the son of Christ and Sarah (Sigurdson) Nissen. He grew up and attended school in Trail. While serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Leo attained the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Victory Medal, Japan-Pacific Theatre Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.
On October 14, 1950, he was united in marriage to Alice May Hagen. For many years, Leo subcontracted house painting. He also worked at the Twin City Army Ammunition Plant until 1972 when he began working for the City of Thief River Falls where he worked until he retired.
Leo was a member of the Teamsters Union and Thief River Falls VFW.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; two daughters, Catherine Lee (Steve) Wilson of Syracuse, Utah and Diane Lynn Eide of Lindstrom; three sons, Richard Allen of Lindstrom, Lonny Leo (Debbie) of Badger and Rodney Melvin of Thief River Falls; 13 grandchildren; three step grandsons; four sisters, Agnes Norberg of Anoka, Seleen Knutson of Thief River Falls, Lillie Beegs of Kenniwick, Wash. and Alverda Cease of Centralia, Wash.
Leo was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Laurie Wilson and September Dawn Eide; parents; two sisters, Helen and Annie; and two brothers, Vernon and Leonard. - submitted by
