Marjorie Chambers
WATSEKA - Marjorie Chambers, 72, one of the most prolific Voice of the People writers to The Daily Journal and to other area newspapers, died Sunday (Dec. 5, 1999) at her home.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Baier Funeral home, Watseka. Pastor Gary Steffe will officiate.
For at least a quarter of a cen-tury, she steadily wrote. Her last letter to The Daily Journal appeared Oct. 17, defending the mayor of Milford.
"He made a mistake. Haven't we all," she wrote. "He has acknowledged that mistake and made restitution. Shall we continue to beat a dead horse - or puppy."
That was typical of her many letters. She asked questions, and was unafraid to take positions that might be unusual or to defend people who might be unpopular. Last year she crusaded to get a warm square meal and a bag of groceries for a hobo.
She would sound religious themes and called for forgiveness and understanding.
"Our politics may differ; but I sincerely believe he is a caring, genuine human being," she wrote about one politician. "As a man thinketh, so is he," she quoted scripture.
In an interview 20 years ago, she said that writing letters gave her pleasure.
"I'd like to see the day when every day there would be a whole page of what people write. The people are what's really important," she said.
Her body was given to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois.
Memorials may be made to the Kankakee County Humane Society.
She was born Feb. 27, 1927, in Decatur, the daughter of William and Queen L. Kempshall Landran.
Her husband, James Chambers, died Jan. 5, 1957.
Surviving are one son, James William Chambers of Dexter, Mo.; one daughter Alexia Helm of Decatur; and five grandchildren, including Dustin Robert and Nicholas Brian Scheppler of Kankakee.
Mrs. Chambers had worked at the Arsenal in Joliet for many years.
Active in community life, she was one of the founders of a group, One to One for a Better Life, that signed up volunteers to visit patients in hospitals and nursing homes.
