Mom was born in Little Rock, AR, because her father was in Little Rock for several months on business. Their actual home and where mom was raised was Wilson, KS. Mom's father was Robert Atkinson and mother was ____ "Wilson" Atkinson. Mom had a brother who was killed in a railroad accident in New Mexico before she was born.
Mom and dad, Joseph Mont McConnell (Greenwood, AR 1/1/05 to 3/28/62) met and married in Kansas City, MO, and moved immediately to Connecticut where mom worked at the Veteran's Hospital in Newington, CT and dad for Shell Oil in Hartford and West Hartford, CT. They lived in East Hartford, where Bill and I were born, the first several years of their marriage and then moved to West Hartford in 1949 where we lived until dad's passing in 1962. Mom then moved to Fort Smith, AR, where she lived until 1973. From 1973 until her death, mom lived on Long Island, NY, near Bill McConnell, where she resided in a nursing care and got the best care we could have asked for during the last years of her life.
Marion "Atkinson" McConnell was a woman who absolutely loved life and never had a bad thing to say about anyone. She was known for her contagious laugh that usually happened at least daily. Mom was always there to love and support and transport my brother, Bill, and me and all our friends to wherever it was we wanted to go--fishing, skiing, baseball or just for an ice cream at Friendly's, Carvel's or A.C. Petersen's--she always joined in with a hot fudge sundae with chocolate ice cream for herself.
Mom was always in integral part of the success of our father's service station business. It was she who took care of all the bookwork, personal charge accounts, inventory records and banking so dad could focus on managing the employees and customers, what he really loved to do.
Our home was small but always a loving place to be. Mom loved flowers and our house was always filled with them, especially her favorite violets. We had dogs, mostly Boston Terriers, cats, fish, and birds to care for and play with. Mom had quite the "green thumb" and managed every summer to produce a garden with the best tomatoes I ever ate. A peach tree and cherry tree produced fruit we always enjoyed and miss to this day. We also enjoyed beautiful rose bushes and tulips around the yard. Mom always gave us a beautiful and loving home to grow up in but, most of all, mom gave us unconditional love for which Bill and I are eternally grateful.
Mom died peacefully after too many years suffering from Alzheimer's. She is buried next to dad in the Forest Park Cemetery, 5001 Midland Boulevard, Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Mom will be lovingly remembered by Bill and me forever and we know she is protecting us from up above.
