JOHN HOWARD MACKSEY 1937-2003
Former Leelanau County resident John Howard Macksey of Kingwood, Texas, died Aug. 31, 2003, at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. He was 65.
The son of John and Iris (Impelmance) Macksey, he was born Dec. 29, 1937. On Oct. 18, 1962, in Galveston, Texas, John married the former Barbara Ochoa, who survives.
Raised on a farm near Suttons Bay, he attended Suttons Bay schools. After a short period of working in the Texas oil fields, he went to sea. In a career lasting over 40 years, John traveled the oceans of the world as a merchant seaman and rose to the position of chief engineer. He retired in 1999 from Lykes Brothers Steamship Co., in New Orleans, La.
An avid hunter, John also raised cattle on his farm in East Texas.
Also surviving is his daughter, Dr. Joan Macksey of Jacksonville, Fla., a brother, Arthur (Barbara) Macksey of Harvest, Ala.; and two sisters, Margaret (Dale) Mikowski of Suttons Bay and Alice Macksey-Kowalski of Ann Arbor.
Preceding John in death were his parents and a sister, Beverly (John Canessa.

HARVEST, Ala. ߞ Arthur William Macksey, 67, of Harvest, Ala., and Suttons Bay, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008, in Huntsville, Ala.
Art was born in Suttons Bay on Aug. 31, 1940, the son of John Dennis and Iris (Impelmance) Macksey. On May 25, 1968, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay, he married his loving wife of 40 years, Barbara Ann ( ), who survives.
Art enlisted in the United States Army on Dec. 18, 1958, serving the majority of his 26-plus year career in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment. His tours of duty included Korea (1962-'63), Vietnam (1965-'68, '69-'70), and Mannheim, Germany (1977-'81). Art retired from active military service as Master Sergeant in 1983 and from Civil Service in 2002.
He was a military history enthusiast who enjoyed flea markets and antiquing. Art especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Art is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Trudy (Jason) Macksey Beach of Harvest, Ala., and Cindy Amos of Bradenton, Fla.; a son, James (Debra) Macksey of Traverse City; stepsons, Jeffrey (Ruth) Challender of Traverse City and Perry (Mindy) Challender of Ecuador; sisters, Margaret (Dale) Mikowski of Suttons Bay and Alice Kowalski of Ypsilanti; eight grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Dennis; a brother, John Macksey; and a sister, Beverly (Macksey) Canessa.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 26, from 11 a.m. until the start of the service at 1 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. Burial with full military honors will follow in East Leland Cemetery.
Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
