Kenneth R. Jones. Actual birth date was December 26, 1920. At 2:30 a.m. The doctor that delivered him was drunk, so he thought that it was still Christmas. Ken was born in South Connelsville, Pa. Kenneth grew up in Connelsville, PA., and graduated from the Connelsville High School in 1938. In 1940, Ken attended the University of Alabama. He entered their Pre-Med program. One of the students that he became friends with was a Law Student by the name of George C. Wallace. Wallace is the one that we all know of as the late Governor of Alabama. Later, after Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japs and the U.S. joined the war, Wallace joined the Airforce and Ken was drafted into the Army and given the status of Medic. While Ken was in the Army, he met Jean Mitchell who worked for the Red Cross. Ken and Jean were married on December 24, 1943.
During the war Ken was involved in the Second Invasion of Anzio that was held in May of 1944. This was called "Operation Diadem." Shortly after the invasion, Ken and another medic were captured. They were shipped to Stalag 7-A, a German Prison Camp, that was located outside of Mooseburg, Germany. During his stay in Stalag 7-A,Ken was given the position of "Man of Confidence" by the German officers that were in charge of the camp. Ken had to act as a lawyer on behalf of the American Prisoners, whenever a problem arose with an American P.O.W. Stalag 7-A was liberated in April of 1945 by General Patton, his army, and the New Jersey National Guard. Once back in the states, Ken went back to the University of Alabama to finish his Degree. He then went on to the University of California Davis to receive his Masters. Ken then moved back to Salem, NJ and became a school teacher at the Salem High School, starting in September of 1948. Ken taught at Salem until 1956 when he transferred to Bridgeton High School, in Bridgeton, NJ. He retired from Bridgeton High School in 1970, after suffering a stroke. During his retirement Ken took up Oil Painting and he wrote two poem books They were entitled "Ancient Whisperings From The Past" and "Greenwich Wedding." Kens wife Jean, passed away in 1986. They had eight children. Ken spent the last years of his life writing poetry and communicating with other P.O.W.'s that were incarcerated in Germany during WWII. Ken passed away in his his sleep on Sunday morning January 16, 1993. Just as his birth certificate was incorrect, so was his death certificate. - submitted by Andrew Jones on 11/12/2013 |
