I met this dear lady some time around 1976 in San Francisco. She was moving out of her apartment to live with, and help take care of her older sister who lived in an old folks hotel. Friends and myself were trying to make money with my pickup truck and placed business cards through out the city. She contacted me and we ended up moving her belongings to her sisters hotel. It might seem strange to anyone reading this why a fifty four year old man would write about an old lady he met when he was 18 years old, but this was no ordinary old lady. In fact in many ways she was younger then me. She was as vibrant as a child and filled with wisdom beyond my comprehension. Helen Niles told me she was retired from the position of secretary to the vice president of Levi Strauss in San Francisco and I knew her as Bunny Niles. Bunny was a nick name given to her as a child by her friends as her maiden name was Babbit, and her girl friends called her Bunny Babbit! A women who taught me so very much of life that she helped to shape me into the man I am now. Any one who knew her would surely understand my writing this, as I am sure she touched their lives as she did mine. An incredible woman who lied about her age during world war one so she could travel over seas with the red cross girls. A voyage that took the lives of half the girls on that ship due to influenza. But let me start by saying moving her belongings turned out to be quite a task. She grew up very poor and because of it, saved every thing she thought might be useful one day. Her small apartment was filled beyond capacity with a long life deserving larger offerings. And so she had the task of deciding what to keep, what to throw away, and what to give to the Salvation Army. And we had the of job of moving it all to a hotel with a bewildered manager who wondered what ever would become of the pickup truck loads of belongings we deposited into his hotels bacement. She had tons of strange useful items. Like a toaster with only one slot, and a small heating element with a long cord that boiled only one cup of water, to tons of butter tubs and their lids, many plastic bags from packages of frozen foods, and boxes in her closet filled with smaller boxes and in those smaller and smaller and smaller and shoes, shoes, shoes. I think you get the picture. I still have items today thet she had given to me. And yet, in no way was she one whom one might call a hoarder. She was just so poor as a child that she learned never to throw something away which another might find useful. A practicer of yoga and a reader of the now defunct metaphysical Science of Mind magazine, at 73 years old she told me she had never seen enough sky in her life. This was the reason why she had the roller shades in her apartment installed with the roller at the bottom of the window. Thus when closed half way, the bottom half of the window was shuttered, blocking a sceanery of buildings and through the top half was viewed her beloved sky. A truly remarkable women. I was so taken by her that I told her I would have propose marriage to her myself, had I grown up with her.
