Here is the rest of the story:
When Osborne Hare was drafted into the service Dec. 6, 1943, his father, Rufus Hare, was not only proud of his son's new naval status, but a little bit envious. Four months later, on March 15, the elder Hare, not able to resist the call to arms any longer, joined the navy.
Because of Osborne's head start, the two were never together at any timem, either in training periods or on leaves home. In fact, they never saw each other in uniform.
Image the surprise, then, of Mrs. Ida Hare, wife and mother, when she opened an envelope addresed to her recently to find her son and husband pictured together. The explanation came in the enclosed letter.
"We though you wouldn't believe it, unless you saw it. So we are sending you a picture as a Christmas surprise." the letter read.
This is the way the meeting that took place somewhere on a Pacific island came about. It seems that the last letter Rufus had received from Osborne took a month's time to reach its destination. Writing in reply, Rufus' letter was delivered to Osborne the very next day.
"Why," Osborne said to himself, "Dad mustn't be very far off." So he began investigating and contact the authorities at once. Then, learning his father's whereabouts, he spent the entire day searching the island until suddenly, as if from nowhere, he heard a shout. It was his dad!
Osborne, whose rank is seaman, second class, is a crew member of an escort destroyer, while Rufus, motor machinist's mate, second class, is on an LSM. Both men trained at Great Lakes and Norfold, Va. Osborne, who is 19 years old, formerly managed the post exchange at Truax field, Madison, Wis., while Rufus worked as an assembler at Ingersoll Milling Machine company.
Mrs. Hare, an employe of the Walt Peterson Coffee shop, lives at 317 7th street. The Hares were Spooner, Wis., residents before they came to Rockford three years ago.
