When I moved to Wray Colorado in 1978 for the, I thought, booming natural gas drilling, I got to town and the next day the p-u needed a boost in the motel parking lot...
Well, I got there. I crossed the street to the Farmer's Cafe, had something and bought a paper. Rentals were $125 and up, 'way out of my price range.
"So let's walk around the town square and see the sights," I thought.
Behind the square was this big faded powder blue Victorian house. Behind the b.f.p.b.V.h. was a little powder blue one-room and a garage, both abutting the street, so I was not trespassing or anything. The door on the little house was part way open and swinging in the breeze.
I went up to the door of the big place and knocked. A little old white-haired lady, who about came up to my chest, came to the door. I introduced myself and told her, "ma'am, the door on your little house seems to be open." "Well, that's not right," she opined, "I'd better close it."
I tagged along while she locked up the little place, and walking her back to her door asked her, "ma'am, have you ever thought of renting that house?" "Well, I have, but I never found anyone I wanted to rent it to."
I told her I had just moved to town, and might she be interested in discussing renting to me? She invited me in and we sat in her kitchen.
We arrived at a price ($65),suggested by her, within my limited means, and I told her, "well, ma'am you don't know me from Adam, do you want to write this down so you have me in writing?"
She looked me hard in the eye, and strongly said, "young man, if my word is good enough for you, yours is good enough for me."
What could I say?
One winter I was working all winter out in western Co, 400 miles away, working for a co with two little bitty drill rigs and a big two-story tin motel (so they got half my $4.25 an hour back). I kept sending Mrs. Grutter in Wray the rent, and after a few months got a letter, "Carlton, you haven't been here all winter, I'm going to have to lower your rent to $35 until you get back."
Mrs. Grutter, they don't make many like that anymore. - submitted by
