Mrs. Elizabeth Harper
Widow of the late Elder Thomas Harper, died on Sunday last at the residence of her son John H. Harper, near McArthur, Vinton County. Mrs. Harper, whose maiden name was Kinsel, was born in Loundon county, Virginia, Oct. 10, 1794 and was consequently in the 83rd year of her age at the time of her death.
She married Mr. Harper in 1811, and with him came to Ohio in 1814 first settled in Muskingum county. They moved upon the farm, two miles south of New Lexington, where Mr. Harper died, and where Mrs. H. lived until a year ago, in 1826 – over 50 years ago.
She was a member, in good standing, of the Calvinistic Baptist church for more than sixty years, during the greater portion of which time her husband officiated as Elder (for the severe simplicity of this branch of the church, the oldest and strictest of the Puritan sects, refuse the title of Reverend to the clergy) in several congregations. She was the last of the original congregation which formed the First Baptist Church of New Lexington.
She was the daughter, wife mother and grandmother of soldiers, who bravely and faithfully followed the flag of the Union in all the wars in which our country has been involved from the opening of the Revolution to the close of the civil was, two sons and four grandsons having perished in the latter conflict.
Mrs. Harper was truly a mother in Israel. Of her nine sons, John H., James W., Patterson D., Alvah K., Calvin and Ezra M. still survive; George A. died young, Thomas K. and Albert died in the army. Her three daughters, Elizabeth A., Margaret M. and Lydia A. are all living. Her living descendants – children, grandchildren and great grandchildren now number more than 250.
Her remains were brought to New Lexington and were buried, as she desired, by the side of her husband, in "God’s Acre" – the cemetery attached to the First Baptist Church – on Tuesday, last, Elder Van Horne officiating at the funeral ceremonies.
