• ROBERT L ESSING User-Added Information
Robert Lloyd Essing was my Great Uncle. He was my Grandmother's brother on my father's side. My Grandmother was Gladis (Essing) Wood, my father is William C. Wood, and I am Theresa Ann (Wood) Dekker. Uncle Bob was a great man. Very intelligent, creative, patient, and he could carry a tune. Uncle Bob sang with Isabel Essing (wife), entertaining people for lunch from time to time when they were younger (I am to understand from other relatives). Uncle Bob loved to work with pigeons. When Uncle Bob enlisted in the Army, he served as a Pigeoneer during WWII before they upgraded to Ham Radio. Uncle Bop served overseas and experienced combat in a number of war zones. The Normandy Invasion (D-Day, +4) was just one of his experiences. +4 means the 4th day following the 1st day of the invasion. He spoke fondly of serving with two men, Harley (I believe his name was Harley) from Texas and Robin. He said he found it funny that xxxx was afraid of horses and he was from Texas. Uncle Bob said that he had found a soup pot and that it was his responsibility to find food to cook in the pot for all of them when they were out on missions (chicken most of the time). Once when they were on mission with their battalion, Uncle Bob found a horse, he convinced Harley to get on the horse with him and the road it into the compound and right into the “Mess” Line (the line for troops getting food). His Commanding Officer didn’t find the humor in it. When they had to travel away from the battalion, they traveled in a jeep. The Ham Radio took up the entire back end of the jeep. They would dig a pit to hide the jeep and cover it up. Uncle Bob said they didn’t have much space around the jeep to hide the enemy would come around. At one location they had a Japanese plane that routinely flew overhead each night. It was always a race to jump in the pit where they took cover. The last man in would literally be sitting on one of the other guys. Harley would fire his riffle at the passing plane with the riffle stock repeatedly hitting Robin in the head when he fired a shot. Uncle Bob said he couldn’t control his laughter to hear “Bang…. Ouch”, “Bang…. Ouch” every time Harley fired. Uncle Bob witnessed men being shot and killed next to him. He did not openly speak of these times. It was only after I gained a true bond with my uncle before he opened up and told me the more difficult experiences in his life. Uncle Bob continued to enjoy raising birds for many years. He dearly missed Isabella H. Essing (wife) following her passing in July 1997. I loved joining both of them for lunch. They had their own way of sharing humor between each other that I enjoyed and now miss. Uncle Bob would share stories with me about my Grandfather that I never met. I was told that my Grandfather had committed suicide but my uncle Bob said that there were circumstances that may not be known. He told me that my Grandfather appeared paranoid with somehow being associated with gangsters and feared for his life and his family. He said that it could have been a mental health issue but could also have been justifiable. Uncle Bob said that my Grandfather had rigged a lottery drawing three different times which allow Uncle Bob to win enough money to build his first home. I hope my family doesn't get mad for my having shared this information. After all, it is history. - submitted by Theresa (Wood) Dekker on 09/21/2012
