Hello. My name is Julia Ann Doty, and Hartwell Doty was my sweet grandfather and I've had a hard time locating information on who his parents were. Because info has been hard to find, and there are some conflicting info, I think but am not sure, I've found that his Mother was Harriet "Hattie" Matlock [possibly Doty here but this is unclear] then Anderson Stroud. In the 1900 census (Boissier and/or Caddo Parish[s]), she is listed as living with her father Marion H. Matlock at age 26, and Marion's grandson, Hartwell lived there too. It says Hartwell was 2 years old and that Hattie was divorced, however I've found some conflicting info that says Hartwell's birthdate was in 1897 not 1896. (I believe it was 1897). And also, on that same census, when you go back and in all that I've found, unless I'm totally confused, but at some point, the names on the census seem to change around Marion H. Matlock's name. At first it's Hartwell Marion Matlock, then it changes to to Marion Hartwell Matlock so I don't know what to think there. In addition, some other conflicting things in some other research I've done show Hattie married Doty (or Dody) before she married Marshall Alonzo Anderson and some have it that she married Anderson first, then she married a Stroud. And I have not been able to find anything on who this Doty was...not even a first name, or any divorce or marriage records. Anyway, I DO know this for sure:
My grandfather Hartwell Doty was half-brother to Marshall Anderson...I just don't know how...shared mothers or fathers?...and I have not been able to find out who Hartwell Doty's father and mother REALLY were. And this has been frustrating. I also know this for sure: My father, Hartwell Marion Doty, Jr. ("Jerry"), always told me that I was related to Hartwell Marion Matlock, the Civil War POW, released at Shreveport in 1865. In researching by starting there, that's when I found out about Hattie, and found Hartwell etc. and from there I see that Hattie and my grandfather Hartwell come from that Matlock line, which is so neat to find out just that much. Also, Hartwell my grandfather ALWAYS told me that his mother was a full-blooded Cherokee Squaw and told of some related incidents with her, and of course, much of those records were destroyed or they just don't exist or were kept "quiet". So that's another conflict...Cherokee Indian or Hattie Matlock? But he never mentioned who his father was, and perhaps it was either not known or perhaps taboo (if Hattie divorced this mystery Doty, etc). He always seemed to feel some sadness about the situation with he and "Uncle Molly" Anderson when it came to their parents. I really hope that this information on your site is actually my Doty lineage as it's been so difficult to get at the truth of who my paternal great-grandparents were. I'm not very well-versed in genealogy (as you can probably tell) but I always hit a dead end when trying to find them. So I'm excited about your site (and understanding it and what it means). So if anyone out there can fill in the blanks for me, that would be so wonderful...and I'd be grateful and excited to learn of the Doty line that has been so illusive! And plus, finding out about some new cousins, etc. would be very exciting too! Thank you! - submitted by
