| I knew Carl as a friend and co-worker in '78 -'79, all too briefly, when he lived in California; I lost contact after he returned to Boston. He had a deep appreciation of classical music, encouraged by his uncle when he was quite young, and did much to advance my own appreciation of classical music and European history. He loved the BSO! He helped me to understand the history of humankind as not just a record of who did what to whom, but a great tragedy; he felt too deeply the hard life of common people and the boundless greed and folly of the well-born.
