| Christopher Degnan was my greatgreat uncle, Michael Degnan's brother who lived in Rhode Island,they were from Maine. Christopher Degnan was in the civil war. So was another brother who ended up in a hospital in R.I> and his brother Michael came down from Maine to be near him, they stayed in Rhode Island. From what I found out Christopher moved to Eureka to be near his future wife and her family that moved there from Maine. A few years ago I did the genealogy on my Degnan family. At the time I went to Eureka I was unaware of his ending up there, recently I found out was buried near the court house. - submitted by

Christopher Aloysius Degnan is my grandfather. He was born in Yosemite Valley before it was a National Park. His father was John C. Degnan and mother was Bridget Degnan. They immigrated from Ireland in 1884 to New York with their sons John and Laurence, then moved to Coulterville, Ca, where John's brother, and his uncle Patrick had settled, then moved on to Yosemite Valley. Patrick at one time lived in Bower's Cave, near Coulterville. John's brother, uncle and aunt are all buried in the Coulterville cemetery. John and Bridget's children were Daisy, Ruth, Laurence Christopher, Alfred, Mary Ellen, and John Degnan. John and Laurence were born in Ireland. The National Park Service has at least two pages with the family history after they settled in Yosemite. If you google "degnan yosemite" they will come up.
Alfred died while still a child after falling and hitting his head. John became a doctor, and lived in the valley. I am told his wife died while his daughter was a young child, so she was raised in the valley by Mary Ellen, who never married. When Dr. John's daughter married, her husband took over the family business in the Valley, and I am told it was sold after they had fiscal difficulties. Laurence became a civil engineer, lived for a while in Alameda in the Bay Area. His first wife was a member of the Martinez family, and he was widowed only a few years after marrying. He eventually became the Civil Engineer for SF, and, ironically, had a part in the building of the Hetch Hetchy Dam. I am told Dr. John was the doctor for the dam during construction.
My grandfather, Chris, grew up in the Valley, went to University at Santa Clara, became an attorney, held the post of commissioner of immigration for CA among other government positions. He married Caroline DeMarais of SF and Sonora, CA, and lived in SF and Livermore, CA, where my father John Christopher Degnan was born. Caroline's aunt, who I am told had the last name Richards or Roberts, also lived in the Valley. Caroline also had an aunt in Hornitos Ca, and spent much time there with her sisters Gladys, Irene, and Mabel.Their father was Bradley DeMarais of SF, a contractor who built many houses in Sea Cliff neighforhood. They were living in a home in the Haight Asbury district in 1908, and my grandmother and her sisters went through the quake folded up in the wall of their house, as the murphy bed they were sleeping in lifted up back into the wall when the house began to shake.My grandmother was 8 years old at the time.
She spent her summers as a young woman hiking and riding all around the Valley and Sierra high country. My Dad lived and went to school in Livermore, San Francisco, and Crescent City, CA, where my grandfather Chris and grandmother Carrie moved when he was high school age. He spent summers in the family house in Yosemite, working in the restaurant with my grandparents. My dad attended Santa Clara also, then saw combat in Korea after enlisting. He then married my mom in Crescent City. Eventually they moved to Arcata and Eureka, in Humboldt County. He attended Humboldt State College and taught many years at Arcata High School.
My sisters and brothers were all born in Humboldt and Del Norte counties.
There was another Degnan family in Humboldt County, in Rohnerville, near Fortuna. I've never met them, but they sound interesting, and may well be related to you. We were always told we were not related to them.
My grandfather Christopher Degnan died in Crescent City in 1964. He is buried in the Bay Area next to my grandmother Carrie just south of SF. He was a wonderful man. My dad died in 2003. He was also a wonderful man. - submitted by Linda Degnan on 08/16/2012 |
| As far as I know, we are the last in the Degnans of Yosemite family to have the Degnan name, as Laurence had no children, and Dr. John's daughter took her husband's name. I'm third in a family of 4 sisters and 2 brothers. I now have 3 nephews and three nieces who also have the last name Degnan. - submitted by

I am looking for an Elizabeth Degnan(Duignan) who was born in Ireland, probably in County Sligo. Her father was charles Duignan but I do not know the mother's maiden name. She had a sister Ann or Anna. One of them lived in San Francisco in 1943-44. One of the girls married a man named Connolly and may have lived in Walnut Creek.
