Marian Brzezinski was born in Poltusk, Poland and intended to make a career as a musician. He played the clarinet and saxaphone. During World War II he was captured by the Russians and sent to a labor camp in Murmansk, Russia. Eventually, the Polish Army was brought under the command of the British Army. He was in the military band, where he formed many friendships with other musicians, but it was war and he saw quite of bit of action.

Marian was badly wounded at the final battle of Monte Cassino and was sent to Bagdad to recuperate. One military document describes "Gunshot wounds: Chest, Right Leg, Left Arm." I recall him telling me that he had some nerve damage and could barely use his left hand. This was particularly distressing since his profession was music (clarinet and saxaphone). Fortunately, the Army sent him for extensive rehab in Bagdad and he recovered full use of his left hand.

After the war he settled in England. Soon he corresponded with a cousin in Chicago, IL, USA. His cousin, Roman Miloszewski, tried to arrange a marriage between Marian and a friend of Roman's who lived in northern Indiana. Roman, who owned a silk screen printing company in Chicago, offered to sponsor Marian to emigrate to the U.S. Plans were made, however, Marian met and married Stanislawa Urbaniak (my mother) in England. Nevertheless the cousin insisted that Marian bring his new wife. Roman and his wife, Helen, housed my parents for several months, during which time I was born. Roman gave my father a job at his printing company and eventually Marian and Stanislawa found an apartment in the neighborhood called Polonia, centered around Milwaukee Avenue and Ashland Ave. Eventually Marian got a better paying job at Automatic Electric Co. in Northlake, IL. Meanwhile, he and several friends from the military band formed a band called The Blue Band. They played at numerous local events, picnics, weddings, etc. and were considered, at the time (1950's & 60's) to be the premier Polish band in town.

In 1987, when I was visiting my parents, he confided to me that he could not manage to know his tie. As much as I tried, I could not re-teach him. That was the first sign of a terrible dementia that ravaged him over the next two years. He died at home (2630 N. Moody Ave, Chicago, IL), in bed, peacefully. He is survived by me, his only child. I had two daughters, Diane (Malik) and Kristine (Scott). - submitted by on 05/02/2015
