On 20 July 1891 a baby girl was born to John Henry and Mary Lucinda Simmons Byington. She was born at Dempsey Creek (near Lava Hot Springs), Idaho, the oldest of four girls and two boys. Her parents named her Mary Elizabeth.
She lived on the farm with her family until she met Henry Stokes of Elba, Idaho. They were married 21 August 1912 in the Salt Lake Temple. Making their home at 1057 North Buchanan, Pocatello, Idaho, Henry Stokes built more onto their home—adding an upstairs for their children's bedroom.
The five children born into the family were: Kenneth (who was killed in the Korean War in 1950), Herbert LaVere (who died as a baby), Ernest, Opal, and Phyllis.
On 28 March 1928, after an illness, Henry passed away leaving Mary to raise four of the five children during the depression years by herself.
In 1938 [26 Feb 1938], she married Lee Blackburn (a railroader). Mr. Blackburn had a son by a previous marriage that lived with Mary and Lee for a while. Lee passed away in August 1942.
On 14 February 1943, she married Frank Bloxham, formerly of Downey, Idaho, and remained at the home on Buchanan. Frank worked for Kraft Cheese, and he had one son (Spencer) by a former marriage. Frank passed away in June 1964.
Mary continued living at Buchanan, raising flowers, tending her yard, and making quilts. She also loved crocheting until her hands got too bad with arthritis. In 1973, she went to live in the East Gate Nursing Home, where she lived until her death.
She had 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. There were three children and her three husbands that preceded her in death.
Mary passed away at 4:52 AM on 25 June 1979 at Saint Anthony Hospital in Pocatello. She was laid to rest in Lava's Cemetery in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, beside her first husband. - submitted by
