I believe that this Ambrose P. Deleon was a mechanical engineer, educated at the University of Michigan, and worked on the Apollo Program and also at ITT-Gilfillan. I met Ambrose in 1979 when I graduated from UCLA, and went to work at ITT-Gilfillan.
Ambrose was my primary mentor. He was a brilliant engineer and a very good man. He was somewhat misunderstood, as his manner of dealing with people was not as tactful as it could have been. However, he was a very great friend and teacher to me. I was chewed out consistently, but it was always in the spirit of teaching me. I learned. And although I the last time I saw Ambrose was in 1983, I have told stories about him many, many times and given him, along with a few other of my mentors and teachers at ITT-Gilfillan full credit for making me into an engineer.
Ambrose was a little crazy, but in a fun way. I was always amazed at all the things that he had done in his life. Hi life could never have been a movie, because no one would have believed it.
I think of Ambrose often, and always fondly. He would bring home-grown tomatoes to work, which we would eat with a little salt for lunch. Then we would take a walk through the streets of Van Nuys, which even back then was a dump, and I would get a dose of philosophy. It all made sense. Ambrose was a good, good man.
I stumbled on this obituary, and even though he passed many years ago, to learn that he is no longer here is difficult. I cried. I feel like I have lost a parent, a friend and a brother.
