Alma H. Beck died at home after a long struggle with a brain tumor. She was cremated and an evening ceremony was held at sea on a drift fishing boat, with over 100 of her friends aboard. There was a minister, a steel drum band, and plenty of beer. She was survived by her daughter, Nancy Beck, of Fort Pierce, her two brothers Joe Hill and Robert Hill of Palm Beach County, nieces Robin Hill Murphy and Carol Hill Johnson, and Nephews David Hill and Steve Hill.
Alma grew up in Savannah, Georgia, and won a contest as "the healthiest girl in Georgia" The prize was a trip to the Chicago World's Fair in 1939. She met her future husband Clarence V. Beck Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah during the war. She was delivering mail on a motorscooter around the base as part of her duties. They married in California when he returned from the Pacific in 1946, and lived in St. Louis. She divorced and moved to Florida with her daughter in 1949; at that time, her mother had a little dress shop in the Colonnades Hotel, and Alma did some dressmaking her first years on Singer Island.
She managed the pool at the Colonnades from about 1950 to 1954. Her first home purchase, built for her at 118 Cascade Lane in Palm Beach Shores, was the 17th home on Singer Island, but was quickly followed by many others.
In 1954 she built Singer Shores Kindergarten in what was the sticks, on the north end of Singer Island. She ran this school and camp until 1978 when she retired. She built her retirement home on Canal Drive, several streets south of the PGA Bridge, on the West side of the intracoastal waterway. and lived there until her death.
In 1960, Alma won, with a dive buddy, the women's AAU national championship for spearfishing. This was the last year that spearfishing was an AAU sport. She was an avid diver, an early SCUBA user, and fierce spearfisher. She spent as much time in the Bahamas each year as she could, and had several boats over the years that she took to the islands. The first was only 16 feet long, and navigation included waiting for the five o'clock plane to land at Grand Bahama so she could be sure she was on the right track. The favorite of her boats was the Bertram 28' that she owned twice. She never tired of the undersea world and the reefs and fishes she saw.
Alma's death was mourned by her many friends, who would visit her at home, or on her boat in the islands, and always be sure of a warm welcome.

Sixty years ago, Alma and I danced a night away at O'Hara's in Palm Beach. I've never forgotten the fun and joy we had back then. It should be obvious I've never forgotten Alma.
