Chalmers Blair Hawn: World War I veteran & Miller Hardware Store retiree. Chalmers Blair Hawn was born April 19, 1896 in Mill Creek. He was the son of the late William Barletz and Annie Margaret (Foreman) Hawn. He was married twice; first on August 12, 1919 in Toledo, Ohio to Mary Blanche Lindsay, who preceded him in death on July 14,1966; second marriage was to Pearl (Boring) Andrews. As a young man, Chalmers attended electrician school in New York City and later attended Juniata College. During World War I, he attended the Lancaster Machine-Gun School and served in France as a machine-gun repairman. At the time of his first marriage in 1919, Mr. Hawn was employed as a conductor for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Returning to Huntingdon in 1920, he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for approximately seven years, then went to work at C.H. Miller Hardware Co., Huntingdon, where he was employed as a shipping clerk for 37 years until his retirement in 1964. Mr. Hawn was a member of First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon, and in its Men's Bible Class for more than 70 years. He was the last World War I veteran-member of both Standing Stone Post 1754 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Frank P. Hommon Post 27 American Legion in Huntingdon. In 1992 the National Office of the Veterans of World War I honored Mr. Hawn by naming him a National Deputy Chief of Staff through Barracks 1433, of which he was a member. Prior to his death, Mr. Hawn remained active by serving as a driver for Meals on Wheels and by serving as treasurer for the Golden Age Club of Huntingdon. At the time of his death (at the age of 97) he was survived by his second wife, Pearl, of McVeytown (she has since passed away); two children, Mrs. (John) Joyce (Hawn) Parks of Huntingdon and Dr. Harold G. Hawn (d. June 21, 2009) who had retired and moved back to Huntingdon; four grandchildren, Debbie (Parks) Bryant, John Parks, Clifford Demarest Hawn (d. June 26, 2008), and Ms Lyndsey Rebekah Hawn; and four great-grandchildren. Chalmers was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by his parents, William B. Clifford Demarest Hawn (January 1, 1952 - June 26, 2008) Sign Guest Book Video Tribute Clifford Demarest Hawn, 56, went to join the Lord unexpectedly at his home, The Deforrest Apartments, 400 9th St., Huntingdon, PA at 9:30 a.m. on June 26, 2008. Born January 1, 1952 in Rome, New York, he was the son of Dr. Harold and Eleanore Hawn, 724 Warm Springs Ave., Huntingdon, PA. In addition to his parents he is survived by a sister, Lyndsey Hawn of Deland, FL; two aunts, Jeanette Rumberger and Joyce Parks both of Huntingdon; and a cousin, William Rumberger of Huntingdon. Clifford was a graduate of Maury High School, in Norfolk, VA. as a body repair specialist. He also graduated from a truck driving school in Richmond and drove trucks for trucking companies in Richmond and Norfolk. He then served as a night watchman and guard for Stoneman, Inc. He then transferred to the venting company that served the Norfolk Navel Base. Clifford served for a number of years as a member of the First United Methodist Church in Huntingdon both as a choir member and Secretary for the Sunday School. He enjoyed playing his flute and guitar, and was very active in singing and playing in choirs of the First Methodist Church and Emmanuel Baptist Church in Tyrone. Their will be no public viewing. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Centre County Memorial Park, State College with Pastor Jack Wiley of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Tyrone officiating. Dr. Harold Gage Hawn -- Music Professor and Minister of Music Dr. Harold Hawn, 86, of Huntingdon, after a lengthy illness, went to be with his Lord and Saviour from the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on June 21, 2009. Born January 8, 1923, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late Chalmers B. and Mary B. Hawn. He was united in marriage to Eleanore Demarest on August 24, 1941 at the bride's home in Huntingdon. Dr. Hawn is survived by his wife, Eleanore, and one daughter, Lyndsey of Palm Bay, Florida. One son, Clifford, and one sister-in-law, Dorothy, of Huntingdon, preceded him in death. He is also survived by one sister, Joyce Parks, of Huntingdon, his sister-in-law, Jeannette Rumberger, of Huntingdon, daughter-in-law, Patricia, and grandson, Edwin, and granddaughter, Laura, of Norfolk, Virginia, and a number of nieces and nephews. He graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1940, after which he served for four years in the U.S. Air Corps as an aerial gunner instructor. After his military service, he received the B.M. and M.M. Degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He served as music instructor at Fredonia State Teachers College in New York, before becoming Director of Music at the Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York. In January 1942, he volunteered to serve in the U. S. Air Corps. He attained the rank of Sergeant and taught gunnery for 3 1/2 years in Idaho and Texas. In 1953, he joined the faculty at The College of William and Mary in Norfolk, Virginia. This college later became Old Dominion University, where for 36 years, he taught voice, opera, chorus, television, music education, producing 70 operas and 2000 television programs. He received the D.Mus. Degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana in 1966. During this time, he also served as Minister of Music, Choirmaster, and Soloist for four churches in Norfolk, Virginia. After his retirement in 1989, he and his wife, Eleanore, joined the Mission Service Corps Volunteers for the Southern Baptist Church and were assigned to the Baptist Convention of Pennsylvania/South Jersey as Music Missionaries. For 15 years they assisted churches throughout the convention by teaching music workshops, conferences, clinics and establishing new choirs, conducting the Male Chorale and the Conemaugh Valley Association Chorus. He also taught choruses and voice classes at the Baptist Conference Centers at Ridgecrest. North Carolina and Glorietta, New Mexico. He was an Honorary Life member of the National Opera Association (serving 22 years as Treasurer) and Southern Baptist Conference. Also Lt. Govenor for the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Phi Mu Alpha, M.E.N.C. and National Opera for Youth (7 years as Treasurer). Publications include: "Choir Singing for the Layman" (1990); Video Tape and Textbook "I've Always Wanted to Sing"(1997); published by the Church Street Press (Lifeway), Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Hawn has donated his extensive music library to Juniata College, The Baptist Convention of Pennsylvania/South Jersey and Emmanuel Baptist Church of Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Dr. Hawn was an active elder and Minister of Music at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Tyrone, where he enjoyed serving the Lord. He was an avid baseball player and enjoyed hunting, cooking and singing in the Choral Union at Juniata College. There will be no viewing of the body. Internment and graveside service at the pleasure of the family will be held at the Centre County Memorial Park in State College, Pennsylvania, with Pastor Jack Wiley, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Tyrone, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 9 West 10th Street, Tyrone, Pennsylvania 16686.
