Reba Cushman
CHELSEA—Reba S. Cushman, 82, died Friday evening, Dec. 12, 2008, at the Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield.
She was born January 22, 1926, in Tunbridge, the daughter of Everett and Ella (Grant) Spear. She graduated from Chelsea High School, where she played basketball. She wanted to be a nurse, but decided to stay home and care for her mother, who was crippled with arthritis. Throughout her entire life, she offered a helping hand to friends and elderly neighbors in need. When her brother was injured by a horse, she did the barn chores and took over delivering the milk.
She worked as a waitress for some time at the restaurant in Chelsea, where she met George Cushman. They were married November 17, 1946. They lived for a short time in Barre, before moving to Chelsea, where they owned a restaurant.
She worked mostly as a cook. For many years, she prepared hot lunch for the students at Chelsea School. She also cooked at the nursing home in Chelsea for several years, and baked pies and cakes for friends and neighbors for their special occasions. She also worked for a time at the bank.
She was a former den mother for the Cub Scouts, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Lady Washington Chapter #86 of the Eastern Star. She was elected Worthy Matron on two separate occasions and held the station of Martha in that organization.
She and her husband danced for over 20 years with the Ed Larkin Contra Dancers. Together they traveled all over New England and danced at the Tunbridge World’s Fair. They were often seen, hand-in-hand, walking down Main Street in Chelsea Village. When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and it was determined that she needed care at a nursing facility, her husband rented out their home where they had lived for over 50 years, and followed her to Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield so that he could be close to her.
Survivors include two sons, Brian Cushman and Gary Cushman, both of Chelsea; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Merlin Spear of Websterville and Wayne Spear of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Roger.
Calling hours were held Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street in Chelsea. A funeral service was held Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the United Church of Chelsea, with Rev. Diana Benjamin officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Highland Cemetery in Chelsea.
