Howard Cursey was the firstborn to Osceola (b. 1884 d. 1943), whose obit listed him as a produce merchant in Ripley and Lee Cursey (b. 1887 d. 1968). They had apparently lived in Dyer County, TN. The family moved from Dyer to Ripley in 1900. Their names I found on Ancestry.com listed on the Lauderdale County TN 1900 US Census as living in a boarding house on Highland Street with 11 other people. Howard was my father's eldest uncle (my father's mother was Bernice Cursey, the younger and only sister to Howard). Howard's brothers were Lowell, Bennie and Robert. In later years Howard married Wilma Cursey, who was 14 years his younger. They ran a bait shop in Ripley for years. She outlived him 30 years and they had no children. She was taken back to Dyer County TN for burial by her relatives. I understand there was some controversy over their marriage but am unsure as to what. Howard previously did have a son, Howard Jr., by another woman who may or may not have been his first wife. He died only seven days after his mother passed. He was buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley. His obit noted he moved to Ripley in 1912 so I am uncertain as to this discrepancy. His only son, Howard Jr., lived in Madrid, Spain with his male partner but it was rumored that he, as well, fathered a child while residing in San Diego, CA (name, mother's name or relationship, sex of child, and child's whereabouts unknown). If he had children, his would be the only legacy to the Cursey name on my father's side of the family as all others are passed or had no children. - submitted by on 08/08/2019

Lee Cursey (b. 1877 d. 1968) was my father's (Edward Cursey Roberson b. 1925 d. 1990) grandmother. She was living in an house now torn down on Highland Ave in Ripley, TN down the street from her daughter's house (my father's mother, Bernice Cursey Roberson). I remember her well. She was short and demure and still had quite a bit of long, flowing grey hair. She often would eat without her dentures in. I remember her favorite show as The Ed Sullivan Show and we watched it many a Sunday night while visiting. I remember the funeral and burial services as it was in February and temperatures had dropped considerably. The ground was cold and hard so mom let us kids sit in the car with the heater running so we could watch. I did get out of the car, however, so I could watch as Mama Lee's (as we all called her) casket was lowered into the ground. She was my first funeral, other than watching the JFK funeral on TV. I don't recall attending her oldest son's (Howard) funeral even though he passed only one week after her death. Rumors of her son's misadventures abound. Most of her children were fond of the drink (as it was called). Her son Lowell, who did have a girlfriend in his later years as I recall and who lived in a home for the mentally ill, never married and had no children. I remember many a summer while playing in her front yard. Lowell would sit quietly in the rocker on her porch watching us play. He was congenial but said very little. He seemed a nice man to me. Mama told us a story once of Lowell getting drunk and bringing a mule into the house as an adult. He also tried to kill her with a butcher knife and she calmly talked him down from the ledge. He also barricaded the doors with furniture once and they had to talk him into coming out. I remember our family going to Dyersburg, TN to visit him once. My mother's Uncle Virgil also lived in Dyersburg so I guess it made sense that we made the visit, which was rare. My sister, Sharon, still has two ashtrays that he made while in therapy in the home where he resided. We did not attend his funeral, as I recall. Anyway, Lee loved her kids and apparently overlooked many of their antics through the years, as my dad would recall. Bennie, the third son, was an alcoholic who was rumored to have sold bootleg whiskey. Bernice, my father's mother, did not get along too well with her mother. Then again, she did not get along well with anyone as I recall. I did recently discover that Osceola (her late husband) and she had a fifth child in 1915 who only lived until 1917. His name was Robert and his gravesite was found on Findagrave.com. This came as a surprise and I think my mother may have forgotten about this or perhaps was never told about him. Both O.S. and Lee are buried across the way in the same cemetery where my father and his other family members rest. Her gravestone still has no date of death. I surmise no one cared or they were too poor or lazy to have it engraved. - submitted by on 08/08/2019
