Joseph Edward Calapa Comments 0 | Recommend 0 August 10, 2007 12:00 AM Joseph Edward Calapa, 89, born on April 2, 1918, was called to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007 at his residence in Brownsville, surrounded by family and caregivers. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth in 1958; father, Peter Joseph in 1961; and mother, Angela in 1976; sister, Vivian Rizzi and brother-in-law, Johnny Cammareri. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Naomi Calapa; son, Paul Joseph Calapa; daughters, Cynthia (Jack) Graham, Camille Calapa, and Gina Marie Calapa all of Brownsville; seven grandchildren, Angela Marie Calapa of New York City, P.J. Calapa of New York City, Daniela Elizabeth (Saul) Levin of San Antonio, Ana Cristina Calapa of San Antonio, Jose Eduardo Calapa of San Antonio, Shelby Catherine Mena of Brownsville, Taylor Anne Mena of Brownsville. Mr. Calapa proudly served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps. His tour of duty found him stationed in Harlingen at the Army Air Base. His love of the Rio Grande Valley lead him to settle in Harlingen after his discharge. He soon became a partner in the J&O Men’s Wear clothing store in San Benito, and then he later became the sole owner of the Brownsville store. Joe “worked the floor” of his beloved store for 50 years, retiring only after becoming too ill to work in 2005. J&O Clothiers now located in Sunrise Mall is capably managed by his daughter, Camille Angela. Mr. Calapa was a past member of the following organizations: Cameron County Park Board, S.J.A. Parent Association, Chamber of Commerce, Order of the Alhambra, Lions Club, Red Cross, Lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Propeller Club, Mem-ber then Chairman of Texas Southmost College Board of Trustees, President of Charro Days for two years. The Brownsville City Commission proclaimed April 2, 1998 as “Joseph E. Calapa Day” in recognition of his 80th birthday. In 2004, Mr. Calapa was recognized on the floor of the State Senate of Texas by Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. for service to his community. A recitation of the holy rosary was held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007 at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista. A private family burial will be conducted prior to a Mass to be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, 2007 at Sacred Heart Church. The family will receive friends at the Historic Brownsville Museum Mary Yturria Room, 641 E. Madison, after the service. Honorary pallbearers will be, Jim McNeil, Mike Santoro, Dr. William McKinney, Romeo Chapa, Emilio Sanchez, Mike Begum, Nicolas Serafy, Jr., Nir Amran, Renato (Ray) Cardenas, Antonio Heredia, Rodolfo Mueller, and Sen. Calapa, 93of Clearfield died on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.He was born on June 9, 1916 in Clearfield, a son of the late Nicholas and Antonia (Borgia) Calapa.Mr. Calapa was employed by the former Elk Tanning Co., Clearfield and later retired from the Clearfield Post Office after 36 years of postal service.He served with the US Army during WW II in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign and the Rhineland Central European Campaign with Co. F, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Division. He was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge.He received a Purple Heart medal, the Good Conduct medal, the WW II Victory medal, the Combat Infantry Badge (44) and two Bronze Stars.He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield and the Clearfield Sons of Italy Lodge #189. Also, the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post #6 , the Clearfield Veterans of Foreign Wars F. Michael Sicks Post No. 1785 and the Disabled American Veterans of DuBois. In addition, he belonged to the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was a member of the APWU Postal Union.He is survived by his wife, Josephine (Ferlazzo) Calapa, whom he wed on June 16, 1962 in St. Francis Church, Clearfielda sister, Mary Williams of Strasburg, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Theresa Calapa and three brothers, George, Thomas and Peter Calapa.Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. with Msgr. H. Desmond McGee, Jr. as celebrant. Entombment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Clearfield. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Posts Honor Guard.Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Maitland police release name of 8-year-old drowning victim MAITLAND — Maitland police today released the name of the 8-year-old Casselberry boy who drowned Saturday while swimming with his father in Lake Maitland. He was Jaxon Calapa. He and his father were swimming off Dog Island in the lake when the child began to struggle, according to police Maitland Officer Louis Grindle. Witnesses pulled the boy and father into a boat and ferried them to shore.
